Winter's Come and Gone

Ushering out an Incredible Winter Season!

SA U18 finish on a High!

The U18 International Series came to a conclusion on Saturday, with France overpowering Western Province XV 85-20 and South Africa bouncing back after a disappointing loss to France, with a resounding 33-19 win over England. English fans will want to look away, as it had shades of South Africa’s 32-12 win over England in the Rugby World Cup Final in 2019.

Let’s evaluate South Africa’s performances in their games with the French and English?

In the first match against France, many thought South African rugby’s future was doomed, which may have been an overreaction if we take a deeper look. What needs to be taken into consideration is that the French team (England too) have played with each other for months, with an U18 Six Nations and other international fixtures under their belts before coming to South Africa. The French also took a heavy beating at the hands of England and definitely looked to prove a point and bounce back from that loss. South Africa, who after Craven Week, played one game together and had about a less than a month to train before playing. They fielded quite an experimental side in that match against France, with a few untried combinations in important positions. The South African youngsters showed great fight to stage a late comeback and make the score-line somewhat respectable given the circumstances they had to play under.

The England match was where we saw South Africa’s youth rugby talent in all its glory! With a dominate performance in all facets of the game and it was really impressive to see how quickly a group of 17 and 18 year-olds could take the setback of a loss, learn from it and convert it into a win. It’s safe to say the talent South Africa continues to produce at skill is still of an extremely high quality!
