Weekend Wrap Up: Derby Day Delivers Drama Across the Country 🇿🇦🏉🏑

It was a weekend for the history books, packed with passion, pride, and pulsating matchups across the school sport landscape.

In Paarl, Boishaai held their nerve in a fiercely contested 2025 edition of the famous Paarl Interschools derby, coming back from behind to edge out arch-rivals Paarl Gimnasium 35-33. The win was powered by grit, discipline and the ever-reliable boot of inside centre Iwan Jordaan, who calmly slotted the match-winning conversion to send the blue-and-white faithful into raptures, in what was an epic King Price Derby Series encounter.

Up in Johannesburg, the Jeppe 1st XV made history in the 100th meeting with old foes King Edward VII, claiming a memorable 39-31 victory to complete a rare double over their Johannesburg Central rivals in the King Price Derby Series. On the turf, Jeppe’s 1st XI continued their recent dominance, taking the honours in a high-stakes clash that kept fans on edge until the final whistle with a convincing 4-1 win.

In Johannesburg, there was silverware on the line at the Pullen and Howell Cups, and both finals delivered top-quality hockey. Affies Meisies triumphed, lifting the Pullen Cup with a 2-0 win over Pretoria rivals Hoërskool Garsfontein, while Hoërskool Menlopark proved their class with a title-winning performance to claim the Howell Cup.

That wasn’t all Menlo achieved, they went on to cap off a dream weekend by edging Paarl Gimnasium 21–20 in a tense DStv Schools Netball Challenge final the weekend before on 26 July 2025. With the crowd at EG Jansen on their feet, Menlo’s composure in the dying minutes sealed a famous victory in one of the tightest finals we’ve seen.

#TimetoSHINE✨- TAKING UP SPACE Spotlight

This month’s feature in the Taking Up Space SPOTLIGHT on SuperSport Schools is the Springbok Women’s Team.

A moment of pride, power and purpose, the Springbok Women stunned the rugby world with a historic 41–24 win over New Zealand at Athlone Stadium this past weekend. It’s a victory that not only boosts confidence ahead of the 2025 Rugby World Cup in England, but also signals that South African women’s rugby has truly arrived on the global stage.

Facing the reigning world champions, the Bok Women stood tall in front of a passionate home crowd, showing physical dominance, smart decision-making, and fearless flair. It marked the first time South Africa have ever beaten the Black Ferns, a defining result built on years of investment, growth and belief in the women’s game.

At SuperSport Schools, we’ve always said: World Cups are won 10 years before they’re played and hope this victory inspires the next generation of stars. Wins like these should inspire the young girls currently playing rugby at school or youth level, and let them know that their dream can become a reality!

As the team heads to England for the Women’s Rugby World Cup kicking off on 22 August, we’re behind them every step of the way.

Good luck, Bok Women. South Africa is with you. Make history again. 💚💛
