She Shapes the Future
We celebrate our women and girls who are Taking Up Space and shaping the future of sports in South Africa
Weekend Wrap Up: Champions Crowned, Derbies Decided
It was a weekend packed with high-quality sport, from thrilling football finals to school rugby derbies that had crowds on their feet.
In KZN, Hilton College etched their name into the history books by lifting the inaugural Primo Big 10 Football Trophy. A composed team display and clinical finishing saw Hilton crowned the kings of the first edition of this prestigious competition, setting the standard for years to come.
Rugby fans were treated to two classic King Price Derby Series encounters. In Bloemfontein, Grey College turned on the style as Darius Erwee led the charge in a standout performance to hand Grey a powerful win over the Maroon Machine, Paul Roos. Meanwhile, in Durbanville, Stellenberg put in a commanding shift against Hoërskool Durbanville, securing derby bragging rights in front of their home supporters.
On the international stage, South Africa’s U17A schoolgirls showed their class as Raffael Abrahams and Chelsea McGregor spearheaded a dominant display in the Allistar Fredricks African Challenge against the Zimbabwe U18A. Their performances highlighted the depth of talent coming through SA schools hockey, with the visitors having no answers for the speed, skill, and finishing on show.
To cap it all off, the SA U18 rugby side delivered a breathtaking performance in Cape Town, running in nine tries to beat England U18s 69–24. That result sealed an unbeaten run through the U18 International Series, underlining the incredible depth in South African schoolboy rugby and offering a glimpse of future Springboks in the making.

This month’s second feature is Timari Jonker

Timari Jonker was named Player of the Match in South Africa U17A’s 3–0 win over Zimbabwe U18A on Thursday at the Allistar Fredericks Africa Challenge. She opened the scoring with a calm penalty corner finish, deflecting Raffael Abrahams’ shot into the net to set the tone for her side’s third straight victory.
Her composure and work rate have made her a standout in a team that has scored 11 goals in three games without conceding once. With the squad preparing for the Dato Mirnawan Cup in Malaysia this November, Jonker is proving herself as one of South Africa’s brightest young hockey prospects.
