The Weekend that Was

This past weekend was another enthralling one for school sports, filled with high scoring encounters and a few more heated derbies. In Johannesburg, the Jeppe 1st XV claimed a 43-31 win over rivals KES, avenging their heartbreaking 23-20 loss back in April. Staying on the rugby field, Maritzburg College proved to be too strong for Pretoria Boys’ High School, winning 43-12 and thus completing an impressive double over the Pretoria schools, having beaten Affies the week before.

In Stellenbosch, Rhenish 1st XI hockey claimed a close 1-0 victory over HS Bloemhof and in Paarl, Paarl Girls beat La Rochelle 36-24 in a Premier Interschools clash.

We were also treated to more SDC Noordvaal rugby, as the race for playoff spots intensify, Helpmekaar edged Monument 38-31 in Krugersdorp, as they look to secure one of those playoff spots, while log leaders E.G Jansen hammered Nelspruit 48-17 as they continue to dominate in the tournament.

Paarl and Pretoria go to War!

This coming weekend, Paarl and Pretoria will be split as the biggest derby matches in the regions are set to take place!

A Premier Interschools clash at the famous Faure Street Stadium in Paarl, will see Paarl Gim take on Paarl Boys’ in South Africa’s biggest and most watched school rugby fixture, with bragging rights in Paarl up for grabs. Form goes out the window, with victory being a strong possibility for either side. It is the last game of the season and last school match for the matrics. The hockey will also provide a ton of spark and entertainment. It doesn’t stop there, Paarl Gim will also take on Paarl Girls in Premier Interschools netball, adding further fuel to the rivalry.

In the nation’s capital, Pretoria, Affies will write another chapter in their long standing rivalry with neighbours, Pretoria Boys’ High School. This will be the 100th anniversary of the rivalry with the schools, having first played each other in 1923. Both schools will have a lot to play for on Saturday.
