From Derby Glory to National Stage

Top school rivalries set the tone ahead of national youth tournaments

Weekend Wrap-Up: Bosch Brilliance, Hilton Composure & Saints in Sync 🏉🏑

The King Price Derby Series took centre stage with two epic clashes, in Cape Town, Rondebosch Boys’ High continued their strong form with a dominant 28–7 victory over Bishops in the annual southern suburbs derby. Bosch established early control through their physical forwards and clinical backline, ensuring there was no way back for their rivals. The performance cements their status as one of the Western Cape’s top rugby outfits this season. In Johannesburg, St Stithians College claimed a 25–21 win over St John’s College in the Pink Derby Day. The match lived up to its billing, with both sides exchanging tries in a closely contested encounter. Saints edged ahead early and showed good discipline to withstand a late surge from St John’s, wrapping up a memorable weekend for their rugby programme with impressive wins in the younger age groups.

Up in KwaZulu-Natal, Hilton College held off a determined Michaelhouse side to win 29–20 on Gilfillan Field to secure a double over their Midlands rivals. Hilton’s captain Liyema Nela was instrumental, scoring the opening try and leading his team through a tense second half. Michaelhouse pushed hard in the final stages, but Hilton’s composure under pressure saw them seal another big derby win.

On the hockey fields, the boys’ fixture between St Stithians and St John’s College saw Saints dominate proceedings, securing an emphatic 4–1 victory. In girls’ hockey, St Mary’s Waverley held off a spirited effort from St Stithians Girls’ College to win 1–0 in a tightly contested battle. Elsewhere, Clarendon edged Stirling 3–2 in East London, while Collegiate Girls’ High put on a clinical display in Gqeberha, beating Woodridge College 4–0.

Photo: Brad Morgan

The Hilton College 1st XV captain, Nela has been in scintillating form this season, leading from the front with poise, precision, and tactical brilliance. Over the weekend, he delivered a match-winning performance in Hilton’s 29-20 victory over arch-rivals Michaelhouse, contributing 19 points through a combination of penalties, a drop goal, and conversions. His ability to control the tempo of the game, mix up his attacking options, and execute under pressure was instrumental in Hilton completing a season sweep over their Midlands rivals.

Nela’s leadership and consistency have not gone unnoticed, he has earned selection to represent the Sharks at Craven Week in July, a fitting reward for a player who has been the heartbeat of his team.
