The Nestor Pierides Memorial Swimming Gala delivered edge-of-your-seat action as Westville edged St Benedict’s in a thrilling finish, while the Kearsney Night Series continued to impress as teams battled it out under the lights. On the cricket fields, Jeppe showcased maturity and composure against SACS, Paul Roos once again reminded everyone why they’re a force, and Clarendon capped off a special weekend by claiming national honours in girls’ water polo at the National Aquatics Festival, a performance that had coaches, teammates and supporters beaming.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, it feels fitting that the sporting calendar is packed with events that remind us why we love the game. This week sees the Night Series spotlight shift to both Kearsney and SACS, bringing more high-tempo water polo action, while Clifton T20 Cricket promises explosive encounters on Sunday. Rounding off the week in style, the Curro Podium Grand Finale Athletics Meet lands in Pretoria, where speed, strength and season-defining performances will take centre stage. Whether it’s under the lights, in the pool, or on the track, school sport is serving up another week full of heart.

York High School in George has enjoyed a standout year academically, capped by the exceptional performance of Head Girl Abigail Kok in the Class of 2025 National Senior Certificate examinations. Abigail achieved the highest overall average in South Africa (98.4%), topping the national results while also earning the top mark in Physical Sciences — a remarkable achievement against a cohort of more than 746 000 candidates.

York High also recorded a 100% pass rate, reflecting the hard work and dedication of both learners and staff throughout the year. Abigail has shared that maintaining balance and avoiding procrastination were key to her success, and her achievement has brought pride not only to her school but also to the broader Western Cape education community.

This month’s first feature is Kuhlesibonge Buthelezi

Buthelezi has emerged as one of Roedean School’s standout water polo goalkeepers, known for her athleticism, sharp reflexes and calm presence in goal. Her journey into the sport began after moving to Gauteng, when her mother encouraged her to give water polo a try a few months before the COVID-19 pandemic, a decision that sparked a passion she quickly embraced, drawn to both the competitive nature of the game and the strong sense of team culture it offers.

Since then, Buthelezi has enjoyed significant success at provincial and national level, representing Central Gauteng, earning multiple Goalkeeper of the Tournament honours, and competing internationally at U16 level for South Africa. As she heads into her matric year, she continues to develop her craft, driven by a strong work ethic and the ambition to test herself against the best in senior school water polo.

This first feature of February in the MONTHLY SPOTLIGHT on SuperSport Schools is Aidan Erasmus

Erasmus has established himself as one of the Western Cape’s most exciting young basketball talents. A key figure for Pinelands High School’s 1st team, he played a pivotal role at the Wynberg Boys’ High Basketball Tournament last year, where his consistent, high-impact performances earned him Most Valuable Player (MVP) honours. His leadership, scoring ability and all-round influence have made him a standout at school level.

Beyond the school courts, Erasmus continues to shine for the Montana Vikings, earning recognition through all-tournament selections and regional accolades. Known for his defensive intensity, shooting range and team-first approach, Erasmus has clear ambitions beyond school basketball, with his sights firmly set on earning a university scholarship overseas when he completes high school. With his work ethic and growing list of achievements, he remains a player firmly on the upward curve.
