Big Statements Across Hockey, Rugby and Cricket and Festival Season incoming

It was a weekend of early-season statements as schools across the country began to find their rhythm in both hockey and rugby, while international action added an extra edge on the cricket field.

In hockey, Paul Roos Gymnasium made a strong statement with an impressive win over Affies, while Parel Vallei and Durbanville also laid down markers with standout performances that signal their intent for the season ahead. On the rugby field, traditional powerhouses delivered big results, with Grey College, Westville Boys’ High, Paul Roos, Pretoria Boys High, KES and Grey High School all securing notable victories as the season continues to build momentum.

Meanwhile, on the international stage, the South Africa U19 Women’s side were narrowly edged by Rwanda in a rain-affected encounter in the Patricia Kambarami Cup, in a match that showcased the growing competitiveness of the women’s game across the continent.

Plenty of early markers have been laid down and if this weekend is anything to go by, the 2026 season is only just getting started.

Viewers can expect an action‑packed Festival Season showcasing some of South Africa’s most iconic school sports events, where tradition, talent and passion collide across the country.

The season opens with the legendary Saints Easter Prep Sportsfest, the oldest Easter festival in South Africa and the 26th edition of the prestigious St Mary’s Hockey Festival. Pretoria Boys’ High School adds historical significance to the calendar as both the Nomads Hockey Festival and Pretoria Boys’ Rugby Festival form part of the school’s milestone 125th anniversary celebrations. Fans can also look forward to the fiercely contested Noord-Suid Rugby Tournament at Affies, the celebrated Bayhill Premier Cup Football Tournament in Cape Town, and a powerful lineup of Easter rugby spectacles at St John’s, Kearsney and KES. The excitement continues into late April with the Grey High Rugby Festival, the massive Wildeklawer Sports Tournament and the Fairtree Sports Festival, each offering elite competition across rugby, hockey, football and netball. With so many stages set for standout performances, this Festival Season promises unforgettable moments and the rise of Tomorrow’s Champions.

Pretoria Boys’ High School marks a remarkable milestone in 2026 as it celebrates 125 years of excellence, leadership, and tradition. Founded in 1901 by Lord Milner, the school has grown from its early origins, including its link to the historic Staats Model School, once the temporary prison of Winston Churchill, into one of South Africa’s most respected educational institutions, recognised for its academic, sporting and cultural achievements. Its iconic red‑brick campus, opened in 1909, remains a heritage landmark and a symbol of a brotherhood built on integrity, honour, loyalty, and respect.

To celebrate this milestone, PBHS is hosting key sporting festivals that form part of its anniversary calendar, including the Nomads Hockey Festival from 28–30 March 2026 and the 125th Celebration Easter Rugby Festival from 4–6 April 2026, both set to bring top schools from across the country to its historic grounds. These events highlight the school’s long-standing passion for school sport and its role in shaping influential figures. Over its 125-year history, PBHS has produced an extraordinary list of alumni, including global entrepreneur Elon Musk, Constitutional Court judge Edwin Cameron, former Springbok captain John Smit, football legend Mark Fish, Nobel Prize‑winning biophysicist Michael Levitt, and Voortrekker Monument architect Gerard Moerdijk, among many others.
