Weekend Wrap-Up: Absa Wildeklawer and More 🏆

The 2025 Absa Wildeklawer tournament in Kimberley once again lived up to its billing as one of the premier events on the school sports calendar, with thrilling action across rugby, netball, football, and hockey. Grey College laid down a powerful marker with a 45–29 victory over Garsfontein, bolstered by standout performances from Lamla Mgedezi and Darius Erwee. Paul Roos Gimnasium impressed with a commanding 46–17 win over EG Jansen, thanks to a superb hat-trick from Tiaan Basson. Paarl Boys’ High ran riot against Monument, posting an 85–0 scoreline, while Affies were equally ruthless in their 74–14 win over Boland Landbou.

Off the rugby field, Parktown High School for Girls and Helpmekaar delivered strong performances in the netball courts, with Parktown sealing a standout win over Paarl Girls’ High. In hockey, Paarl Gimnasium emerged as the inaugural Belgotex Sport Girls Challenge champions, edging out Herschel 3–2 in a dramatic penalty shootout. Elsewhere, Hilton College secured a hard-fought 25–20 win over long-time rivals Michaelhouse in one of South Africa’s most storied rugby rivalries.

The inaugural Curro Halala Cup kicked off with excitement, featuring 64 top school football teams from across South Africa. In Gauteng, The King’s School Linbro Park defeated HeronBridge College 5–2, while Curro Soshanguve edged out Curro Pretoria 5–4 on penalties after a 1–1 draw. In the Western Cape, Curro Somerset West triumphed over Curro Sandown 4–3 and Camps Bay High School secured a 4–1 victory against Somerset College. In Limpopo, Northern Academy continued their strong form with a 2–0 win over HTS Tom Naudé and Florapark Comprehensive High School beat The Future Comprehensive High School 4–1. These matches set the stage for the next round of the tournament, with the top 16 teams advancing to the grand finals scheduled for 8–10 August at HeronBridge College in Gauteng.

Coming Up on SuperSport Schools

This weekend, the SuperSport Schools cameras turn to Cape Town for another epic edition of Hyundai Friday Nite Lights Hockey as SACS take on Bishops under the lights on Friday, 9 May. Netball fans are in for a treat as Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Girls’ High square off against Oranje Meisieskool on Saturday and Sunday respectively, in a clash of South Africa’s most competitive schoolgirl teams. If that’s not enough, the King Price Derby Series returns in full force on Saturday, 10 May, with a blockbuster triple-header. Paarl Boys’ High host Grey College in a clash of titans, Dale College meet Queen’s College in a fierce Eastern Cape showdown and Paul Roos welcome rivals Paarl Gim in a matchup that’s bound to light up Stellenbosch. Her outstanding play throughout the competition earned her the U19 Player of the Tournament award, highlighting her as one of the premier talents in South African school netball.

Van Heerden's leadership and skill were instrumental in Paarl Gim's journey to clinching the tournament title. Her ability to control the game's tempo, coupled with precise passing and strategic playmaking, set her apart on the court. As she continues to develop her game, Nicola van Heerden is poised to make significant contributions to South African netball in the years to come.

Erwee delivered a masterclass at the 2025 Absa Wildeklawer Festival, steering Grey College to a commanding 56–14 victory over Helpmekaar Kollege. The flyhalf showcased his all-around brilliance by scoring a try and successfully converting all eight of Grey’s tries, amassing an impressive 21 points. His performance was marked by tactical precision, seamless game management, and clinical finishing, earning him the Man of the Match accolade.

Erwee's influence extended beyond the scoreboard, his composure under pressure and ability to orchestrate play were pivotal in Grey College's dominant display. His standout performance not only highlighted his individual talent but also underscored his potential as one of South Africa's most promising schoolboy rugby prospects. As the season progresses, Erwee remains a key figure in Grey College's pursuit of excellence on the rugby field.
