Easter Wrap-Up: A Week of Thrilling School Sports đ
The 2025 Standard Bank Easter Sports Festivals delivered unforgettable moments across the country. At the KES Easter Festival, the final rugby match between KES and Northwood was cut short due to lightning, with Northwood leading 12â7. Earlier, Noordheuwel staged a remarkable comeback to edge Jeppe High School for Boys 21â20, marking their first win of the season.
In KwaZulu-Natal, the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival saw Westville Boys' High and Durban High School (DHS) finish unbeaten. Kearsney College concluded their campaign with a commanding 48â8 victory over Peterhouse. Standout players included Westville's fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya and Milnerton's flank Briint Davids, both earning top individual honors.
Meanwhile, the Saints Sports Hockey Festival was a goal-fest, with the final day featuring 38 goals across 12 hockey matches. The 21st KES Hockey Festival concluded with thrilling finishes, showcasing the depth of talent in school hockey.

Upcoming Events: Curro Halala Cup & King Price Derby Series
The inaugural Curro Halala Cup kicks off from 23â24 April, featuring 64 top U19 football teams from public and private schools. The tournament begins with knockout rounds at venues including HeronBridge College and Waterstone College in Gauteng, and Curro Century City in the Western Cape. The top 16 teams will advance to the finals in August, with a grand prize of R100,000 at stake. Then, on 26 April, the King Price Derby Series returns with a blockbuster slate of rugby rivalries, Grey College host Paarl Gimnasium in what promises to be a titanic clash between two giants of school rugby, Queenâs College take on longtime rivals Selborne College and Pretoria Boysâ High go head-to-head with Maritzburg College. Expect fierce competition, big hits, and unforgettable moments.

âdu Plessis, captain of Rhenish Girlsâ High Schoolâs 1st XI hockey team, continues to solidify her reputation as one of South Africaâs premier schoolgirl hockey players in 2025. Building on a stellar 2024 season where she led Rhenish to their maiden Fairtree Super 12 title and a national number-one ranking , du Plessis has maintained her exceptional form into the new season.â
In March 2025, during the Synsport Greg Beling Festival, du Plessis showcased her leadership and skill by scoring a brace in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Eunice High School, a match that highlighted her ability to perform under pressure . Her consistent performances earned her the Player of the Tournament accolade, an honor she shared with Nicola Forbes from St Maryâs DSG . Additionally, du Plessis celebrated a significant personal milestone by earning her 150th cap for Rhenish in a match against Clarendon High School

Westville Boysâ High Schoolâs fullback, Siyaya, has emerged as one of South Africaâs most exciting schoolboy rugby talents. In 2024, he scored 17 tries in 16 matches across school, provincial, and national levels. Notably, he delivered a hat-trick for the SA Schools team against the SA Schools A side and added a brace in a thrilling 38-26 victory over Ireland U18, underscoring his prowess on the international stage.
Siyayaâs versatility and athleticism have been pivotal to Westvilleâs success. His standout performances at the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival earned him the Best Backline Player award and a spot in the Festival All Stars Team. In a memorable match against Hilton College, he scored two tries, leading Westville to their first win over Hilton in a decade. Beyond rugby, Siyaya has showcased his athletic talents in basketball and football, highlighting his multifaceted sporting abilities.
