Making Her Mark!

The strength of South African Women’s sport was on full display this past week and weekend. Our football team, Banyana Banyana made history twice, as they won their first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup match, in a group stage match with Italy and earned a spot in the Knockout Round for the first time too. Unfortunately, their tournament was ended in a loss against a strong Netherlands side, nevertheless, our girls still made us proud!

South Africa also had the privilege of hosting the Netball World Cup in Cape Town, although our Spar Proteas weren’t able to bring the trophy home, we were treated to some spectacular netball and drew in massive crowds, showcasing Women’s sport on a global stage in our backyard. There is no doubt that our Spar Proteas will be back stronger than before!

At School level we were treated to two derby day match-ups, in Paarl, Paarl Girls beat Paarl Gim 30-26 in a Premier Interschools netball clash. Paarl Girls completing an impressive double over their cross-town rivals! In the Eastern Cape, Clarendon High School for Girls competed against Collegiate Girls’ High School in a derby day match-up, in both netball and hockey. Clarendon edged Collegiate in the hockey, but Collegiate took the win on the netball court.

The Biggest derby in Paarl?

The Paarl Derby between Paarl Gim and Paarl Boys/Girls isn’t the only derby in Paarl, according to some locals, it’s not even the biggest! This weekend Klein Nedberburg Secondary School will take on New Orleans Secondary School in an FNB Classic Clash in rugby and netball!

A fierce rivalry between two schools that don’t get as much time in the spotlight as the other schools in the area, yet still have so much talent and passion to showcase to the country. It’s about time this historic derby gets its #TimetoShine!
