Welcome back to the Heartbeat of South African School Sport 🇿🇦

Welcome to the 2026 school sports season! We hope you had a restful, safe, and well-earned break, and that learners, parents, teachers, coaches, and fans are feeling refreshed and ready for another unforgettable year of school sport. As always, SuperSport Schools is here to bring you closer to the games, the stories, and the rising stars who continue to light up fields, courts, tracks, and pools across the country.

And what a way to kick off the year. The Switch Schools SA20 Volume 2 returns with Phase 2 and the Finals phase for both boys and girls, as the next generation of cricketing talent battles it out on the national stage. On the athletics track, the final week and weekend of January will see two massive meets take centre stage, the Curro Hazeldean Top 14 Athletics Meet and the Affies Afgri Athletics Meet, where speed, strength, and school pride will be on full display.

Looking ahead to February, the Gauteng Development League Knockouts promise high-intensity football as teams fight for survival and silverware, while cricket fans can also look forward to the always-exciting Clifton T20 Cricket Tournament and that’s just the start.

It’s shaping up to be another blockbuster year on SuperSport Schools, and we’re excited to take you along for every moment. Let’s make 2026 one to remember!

SuperSport Schools #HereforHER Feature 🩷 💪

In this segment, we celebrate the Girls and Women in our ecosystem, from employees, to school and youth athletes. All the amazing women that contribute to the SuperSport Schools Brand!

This year’s first feature is Nobubelebesisa Zwane

Photo: Cricket South Africa

At just 13 years old, Zwane is already emerging as one of South Africa’s most exciting young talents in girls’ cricket. Representing KZN Coastal, Nobubelebesisa has impressed selectors with her maturity at the crease, natural batting ability, and competitive spirit, qualities that earned her a call-up to the South Africa U19 Women’s Emerging Squad, a remarkable achievement for someone so young.

Balancing her cricketing development with her schooling at Grantleigh High School, Zwane’s journey reflects her passion for the sport and her rapid progression through age-group ranks. Her inclusion in national development squads underscores her potential to become a future star of South African women’s cricket, an inspiring example of what dedication, talent and opportunity can achieve at the earliest stages of a sporting career.

#TimetoSHINE- January Spotlight

This first feature in the MONTHLY SPOTLIGHT on SuperSport Schools is JJ Basson

Photo: Floris van Schouwenburg (Gallo Images)

Basson has made a significant impact on the South African school cricket landscape with his dynamic all-round capabilities. A key player for Hoërskool Noordheuwel, Basson’s technical skill and cricketing intelligence have seen him influence games with both bat and ball throughout the season. His performances earned him selection to the Paarl Royals squad for the Betway SA20, a major milestone that places him alongside some of the country’s top professional talent.

Basson’s rise didn’t stop there. He was also selected for the South Africa U19 World Cup squad, a testament to his consistency, temperament, and potential on the international stage. Balancing aggressive scoring with disciplined bowling, Basson has quickly become one of the most exciting young prospects in South African cricket. With his blend of all-round talent and big-game composure, he’s poised for a bright future at both the domestic and international levels.

School Feature: Pretoria Boys High School

Trilogy Ocean Challenge — Endurance With Purpose 🌊

In January 2024, a pair of Pretoria Boys High School alumni took on one of the most extreme open-water swim challenges in the world, the Trilogy Ocean Challenge, an initiative of the South African Hall of Fame’s Legacy Quest.

This world-first endurance swim sees participants brave three gruelling segments in the icy Atlantic Ocean off Cape Town, including ultra-distance solo legs never before completed in South African waters, to raise vital funds for bursaries and opportunities for talented young South Africans who lack the means to access quality education.

Their efforts weren’t just about testing physical limits; every stroke helped support the Legacy Project’s mission to empower learners and build brighter futures.

Now, the next frontier awaits: the 66 km False Bay Double Crossing, scheduled for this year, has never been completed as a solo swim and promises to be the most ambitious leg yet. Every stroke in this extreme challenge helps create real opportunities for young South Africans who deserve access to quality education and life-changing support.
