Summer Champions Crowned as Winter Sport set to Begin🏆
The past weekend delivered a fitting close to some of the biggest summer competitions, with champions crowned and standout performances across cricket, football, basketball and swimming.
In the Switch Schools SA20, Queen’s High School lifted the girls’ title thanks to superb performances from Mankwana Moriri and Refilwe Mokgara, while Jeppe High School for Boys claimed the boys’ crown after a dominant campaign. On the football field, Mamelodi Sundowns’ School of Excellence began their Gauteng Development League title defence in style, with Moreri’s hat-trick powering an emphatic opening victory. Meanwhile, Maritzburg College showed their strength on the court by dominating the KZN Top 10 Basketball competition, and in the pool, St Mary’s once again made waves by claiming top honours at the Inter-High Gala.
While the summer season wraps up, the spotlight quickly shifts to the start of winter sport this weekend. The Mzwandile Mali Rugby Final takes centre stage in Gqeberha on Friday, before the King Price Derby Series returns on Saturday with two big clashes, Northwood vs Glenwood and Nico Malan vs Outeniqua. Hockey also returns under the lights as Jeppe Boys’ host St Benedict’s in Friday Nite Lights, while Gauteng Development League action continues with Siwele FC taking on Highlands Park at Megawatt Park.

The swimming team from St Mary’s School Waverley continues to set the standard in Johannesburg schools’ aquatics after claiming a remarkable fifth consecutive Premier Inter-High Gala title. The historic 100th edition of the Inter-High gala, hosted at the St Stithians College Aquatic Centre, once again showcased the depth and dominance of the St Mary’s squad as they outperformed some of the top girls’ schools in the region. St Andrew’s School for Girls finished second while St Stithians College placed third, but St Mary’s proved too strong across the competition.
Under the guidance of coach Cobus Kruger, the team produced a series of impressive performances in the pool. St Mary’s claimed 13 gold medals from the 29 events, along with seven silvers and eight bronze finishes, amassing a winning total of 388.5 points. Their strength in the relay races proved decisive, with the team winning eight relays to secure valuable points and underline their depth and teamwork. With consistent excellence and a culture of hard work, the St Mary’s swimmers have firmly established themselves as one of the leading school swimming programmes in Gauteng.

Her Growing Voice: International Women’s Day Special 🌺

This International Women’s Day, SuperSport Schools celebrates the power of opportunity through the broadcast journeys of Itumeleng Banda and Yvette Mhlauli, a story that perfectly reflects the spirit of the Give to Gain campaign.
Itumeleng’s journey began in 2022 when a recommendation opened the door for her to step into presenting at the St Stithians Sports Festival. Despite her nerves, she embraced the opportunity, growing through coverage across multiple sporting codes before finding her passion in football. SuperSport Schools became a development platform that shaped her skills and confidence, ultimately leading to opportunities with SABC and later SuperSport International.
As Itumeleng’s career progressed, space opened for a new voice to emerge.
Following her standout performance in the SuperSport MVP Talent Search, Yvette Mhlauli joined Football on 216 as hostess, bringing authenticity, passion, and a fresh perspective to the show. Already a rising broadcaster at YFM, Yvette represents the next generation of storytellers in sports media.
Together, their journeys highlight the true meaning of Give to Gain, when one woman’s growth creates opportunity for another to rise. At SuperSport Schools, development extends beyond the field, proving that when doors are opened and opportunities are shared, everyone moves forward.
